Overview

A leading cement manufacturer in Asia, operating across seven countries with 4,500+ users, embarked on a major SAP S/4HANA Transformation Program to modernize its IT landscape and drive operational excellence.

The organization sought to reduce operating costs, standardize processes, and enhance business agility by adopting the latest SAP technologies. After a rigorous evaluation process involving Tier-1 global and Indian IT providers, Coforge was selected as the strategic transformation partner for this multi-country initiative.

The program encompassed migration from SAP ECC 6.0 to S/4HANA 2023, covering subsidiaries across Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, and aimed to create a future-ready digital foundation with streamlined operations and improved user experience.

Scope

The engagement covered end-to-end SAP S/4HANA Brownfield Migration, including:

  • SAP Modules: Sales & Distribution (SD), Finance & Controlling (FICO), Materials Management (MM), Human Capital Management (HCM), Production Planning (PP), Plant Maintenance (PM), Quality Management (QM), Project Systems (PS), SAP BASIS & GRC, Fiori and PO to Cloud Platform Integration (CPI).
  • Greenfield Implementation: Group reporting and SAC Implementation.
  • Third-Party Integrations: SFDC, Oracle Transportation Management (OTM), Ariba, SuccessFactors, DMS, and multiple banking systems
  • User Base: 4,500+ users across seven business operations

Challenges

  • Extensive Code Complexity: Over 11,000 custom ABAP objects required remediation to align with S/4HANA standards.
  • High Integration Density: More than 350 integration objects with 35+ non-SAP systems required re-mapping due to obsolete tables and T-Codes.
  • Business Partner Conversion: Transitioning from traditional master data models to Business Partner framework caused integration challenges for external applications.
  • Technology Upgrades: Conversion of legacy FIORI applications and migration of BI data sources to CDS views posed technical challenges.
  • Settlement Management Migration: Rebate management migration to S/4HANA Settlement Management required extensive testing and reconfiguration.
  • Custom FSCM Integrations: Highly customized Financial Supply Chain Management (FSCM) processes led to integration complexities, as standard functionalities were not adopted.
  • Extensive Testing & Training Needs: Multiple dependencies, sub-process complexities, and new functionalities necessitated detailed user training and large-scale testing cycles.

    • Performed detailed code and data remediation planning for 11,000+ custom ABAP objects.
    • Designed integration mapping blueprints to ensure clean connectivity with 35+ non-SAP applications.
  • Clean Core Implementation:
    • Established a “clean core” integration architecture through SAP Cloud Platform Integration (CPI) for over 350 objects, ensuring maintainability and scalability.
    • Rationalized and consolidated multiple FIORI applications into a unified, embedded FIORI version for improved usability and governance.
  • Targeted Functional Enhancements:
    • Migrated rebate management to S/4HANA Settlement Management with thorough configuration and regression testing.
    • Initiated greenfield implementation of Group reporting and SAP Analytics Cloud as part of the S/4HANA conversion journey.
  • Risk Mitigation & Change Management:
    • Conducted multiple user enablement and training sessions to ensure smooth adoption.
    • Adopted an incremental testing approach to validate all custom integrations and ensure system readiness.
