Modernizing the Ramp Handling System to Provide a Lower Cost of Ownership and Superior User Experience for a Leading Asian Airline

Modernizing the Ramp Handling System to Provide a Lower Cost of Ownership and Superior User Experience for a Leading Asian Airline

Business Challenge

The client was challenged with safety and compliance with the existing ramp management system. In addition, the application had performance challenges and high cost of maintenance, built on legacy technologies – Sybase and Power Builder. This monolithic implementation of an outdated technology with no platform support made it challenging to maintain. The rigid structure led to costly and risky enhancements, slower go-to-market (GTM), and extended-release cycles.

Coforge Solution

The project required a deep domain understanding of the application to extract the business use cases from the existing application stack. We undertook a green-field development of the application using microservices architecture and a web-enabled user interface. This cloud-first application approach allowed for agility and a flexible architecture that adopted technologies like Kubernetes and Angular.

Our solution involved:

  • Containerization of the Ramp Handling System application.
  • On-demand, auto-scaling configuration for worker node and Amazon Aurora Serverless.
  • Building and deploying the application natively on AWS for Application Modernization
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with all services launched using CloudFormation scripts.
  • Providing the ability to release new capabilities at will.

Results

  • Fully compliant system for safety & regulatory requirements.
  • Improved application efficiency with 35% faster user response times with 70% reduction in infrastructure costs.
  • Utilized cloud-native services for built-in log analytics and monitoring, enhancing system performance and user experience.
  • Ensured high availability, resiliency, and optimization for the new application, leading to an overall improvement in system performance.
  • Adopted an agile platform engineering approach, further boosting system agility and observability.

Key Highlights

Leveraging our expertise in modernizing legacy systems, we delivered the project using microservices architecture and cloud-based solutions to deliver improved user experience, enhanced system performance, and agility into the client's technology landscape along with significant cost savings.
