Decommissioning 7 Legacy PAS Systems Post Migration to a Modern PAS

The Client

The client is a not-for-profit fraternal benefit society and a Fortune 500 Financial Services organization. It offers financial products and services including life insurance, annuities, disability income insurance, health insurance and bank products to its nearly 3 million members

Objective Reduce the number of applications in the overall System Portfolio by decommissioning certain systems Save the cost of maintenance on systems which are old, legacy and redundant technology. Save the time of the client’s in house SMEs. These SMEs can then work on other critical projects and company initiatives The Challenge Client executed a PAS consolidation program resulting in the need of decommissioning of legacy PAS systems. There were six different PAS systems and one PAS with two different versions. The client desired to consolidate and reduce the old and redundant applications from its overall landscape The Solution

Framework

Coforge SMEs have vast experience in decommission of systems. As a result of this, Coforge built a Proprietary Framework for Decommission. A group of experts for Decommissioning were formed to handle this complex task namely Application Decommissioning Team (ADT). The Decommission Framework is equipped with home grown tools and accelerators to help Decommission applications with ease and accuracy. The Decommission Framework has a five-step process – Identify opportunity – Shortlist applications that can be decommissioned by taking inputs from Application owner on the Risk, cost and redundancy Analyze – Evaluate Risk, Estimate Benefits, Determine Feasibility, Prioritize and check on full dependency Plan – Check legal and regulatory guidelines for data redundancy, estimate efforts and source funding Execute – After getting the approval from all stakeholders, migrate functionality, data, Delete or Archive code and data to Target systems. Conclusion – Release of Hardware and software

Framework based approach helped in:

Quickly identifying systems to be decommissioned with complete details on system ownerships, dependencies, and regulatory obligations within a short span of time. Following a systematic approach to decommission systems with proper approvals, adhering to data archival and data preservation as per regulation.

Solution

Coforge followed its Decommission process executing through its Application Decommission Framework. The ADT used the tools and Accelerators to ensure the Decommission process took place with accuracy and less of iteration. The project was concluded before time with timely approvals from the client on sun-setting the systems and deactivating them from future operations. Data was archived to a different system and access is provided for any Audit purpose and for MIS or Regulatory compliance Technology Stack
